Relatives and friends are working to raise money toward erecting a life-sized statue of a 19-year-old soldier from central Indiana killed in Afghanistan a year ago.

Dozens of people attended a memorial program Sunday at the Owen County Fairgrounds marking the anniversary of Army Pfc. Brett Wood's death.

The Herald-Times reports that his family hopes to raise $35,000 for the statue of the soldier from Spencer that would also serve as a reminder of the service and sacrifice of other veterans. About $1,400 has been collected so far.

Josh Wood told the audience at the memorial service that his cousin Brett was his best friend and the best person he had ever known.
