Evening showers and storms precede much cooler air

The strongest storms are departing Indiana, but additional scattered showers and storms will move through this evening along a cold front. These will likely be below severe limits, but certainly have locally heavy rain/lightning potential.

This front not only triggers a narrow line of new rain and storms, but ultimately delivers the first installment of the much advertised mid-week cool down. Notice the 50-degree temperatures behind the front under a canopy of overcast. That’s the weather set up for us the rest of the week.

Rain from this front should exit the state by 10pm, but we’re expecting additional showers to develop overnight into Wednesday morning as the front stalls in southeast Indiana.

The boundary becomes a focal point of widespread rain by midday Wednesday, with strong to severe storm potential in the southeast corner of the state where temperatures will be warmer.

We’ll definitely need to monitor the Slight Risk region tomorrow which currently includes Richmond, Greensburg, Columubs and Seymour.

With or without severe weather it’s not an ideal day for practice at IMS. In fact the afternoon may become a wash out as the rain the overspreads the region. If you’re heading out Wednesday, or have outdoor plans, here’s a link to Live Doppler 13 Radar and where you can download the WTHR Weather app to your mobile or tablet device.

You’ll definitely notice cooler highs Wednesday but humidity will remain uncomfortable as dew points stay in the upper 50s and lower 60s. Waves of rain can be expected tomorrow as low pressure rides along a stalling front. As this system pushes to the north and northeast, it will drag down an impressively cool air mass for mid-May standards… with highs in the 50s Thursday and Friday and lows in the lower 40s (possibly 30s for some).

A cold core low spinning over the Ohio Valley keeps afternoon instability showers in play Friday, and possibly sprinkles Saturday afternoon. We’ll have to wait to see where this feature will be as we get closer to the weekend. The cool air aloft will keep the sky fairly cloudy Friday and Saturday, with brighter conditions Sunday into early next week as the air modifies.

Have a great evening – Sean Ash
