A unique outdoor center opened today at Eskenazi Hospital that will focus on community wellness.

Civic leaders, politicians and health leaders attended a ribbon cutting Tuesday for "The Commonground" at the entrance of Eskenazi Health. The new outdoor space - created with philanthropic dollars - includes trellises, terraces and water fountains meant to promote healing for the community.

"We know that someone's mental health affects their physical health, their feelings of wellness...their ability to heal," said Julie Szempruch, Associate Vice President of Eskenazi Midtown Mental Health.

The Commonground also features a park and a restaurant called Duos that will be open 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. They also plan to host art exhibitions, music performances and weddings.

"We want this to be a place that people feel good about going to," added Szempruch. "Don't just come when you're sick - come to feel better, come to enjoy the scenery."

Yoga classes have already been setup and plans are in the works for family movie nights.
