EPA seeks to add 3 Indiana Superfund sites to list
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to add three Superfund sites in Indiana to its highest priority cleanup list for hazardous waste sites.
The EPA proposed Tuesday adding Superfund sites in South Bend, Indianapolis and the Bartholomew County community of Garden City to its National Priorities List. That list lets policy makers and the public know which sites are deemed most in need of being cleaned up.
Indiana's Superfund sites proposed for addition to the high priority list include Beck's Lake, a former automotive and hazardous waste dump in South Bend where asbestos, oils and other wastes were dumped.
The two other sites are groundwater chemical plumes in Indianapolis' Keystone Corridor and in Garden City just south of Columbus. Both plumes have been traced to disposal of various industrial wastes.
