The Elkhart Fire Department dyed the Elkhart River green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Lt. Jim Rodino told The Elkhart Truth the department used 10 gallons of the biodegradeable dye to turn the river green. About 50 people watched as firefighters used the ladder on Truck 18 to reach further out across the river at the waterfall across from the main fire station to do the job.

Also on Saturday, hundreds of people gathered at nearby Simonton Lake on Saturday to watch people brave below-freezing temperatures and icy water to take part in the Leprechaun Leap, jumping in the water to raise money for United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
