Hundreds of Hoosier kids are starting school this year with the learning tools they need for class.

Sanders Temple Church on the east side of Indianapolis handed out free backpacks Monday night. Nearly 500 children showed up for the giveaway, which is part of the church's annual back to school event and outreach ministries.

Every student got the chance to pick out the backpack of their choice and what made the giveaway even more special is what came in the bags.

"There are folders, notebooks, pencils, crayons, markers, colored pencils in some, pencil boxes, everything the students need to at least get started for the school year," said mother Stephanie Smith.

The back to school event also included a free barbecue dinner for the families.

Parents say they believe their children like learning better when they have the proper school supplies, which some families just can't afford.
