Drunk driving suspected in I-74 Boone County crash
Investigators say alcohol may have caused a wrong-way driver to get into a fiery crash overnight in Boone County.
A semi crashed around 3:00 am on I-74 west of the Jamestown exit.
The truck driver told police a car was driving in the wrong direction on the interstate. He tried to swerve to avoid the car but they crashed.
Truck driver Donald Bentley of Nora, North Carolina, said he was delivering a load of furniture to Hudson, Wisconsin when he saw a car traveling the wrong way in his lane.
"I seen her, you know, and for a second she was coming pretty fast and I didn't have time to do much of nothing except miss her," he said.
The driver of the car, 20-year-old Maggie Tinsley of Greenwood, was taken to Methodist Hospital with unspecified injuries. She was described by emergency crews at the scene as "drifting in and out of consciousness."
Police took a blood draw from Tinsley and say alcohol was likely involved.
The crash closed a section of westbound I-74 closed in Boone County, west of the State Road 75/Jamestown exit, for several hours. Westbound traffic on I-74 was being diverted at the Jamestown exit.
