Drummer Ricky Lawson dies; worked with Jackson, Clapton

Remember the drum beat that comes just before Whitney Houston's big finish on her hit "I Will Always Love You?" That was the work of Rick Lawson.

The studio drummer has died - but not before making a mark in the industry.

During his career as a drummer, he worked with stars like Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins, as well as Houston.

Lawson died at a hospital in Long Beach, California on Monday. He had become disoriented during a performance on December 13 - and was diagnosed with an aneurism. He was removed from life support 10 days later.

Among those who count themselves fans of Lawson's are fellow percussionists Questlove of The Roots and Shelia E. Questlove called him "the master" after hearing he had been stricken and Sheila E tweeted yesterday that Lawson was "a great man, drummer, father, brother and son."
