A driver is in serious condition after a crash that took out utility poles, broke power lines and landed his SUV in a creek.

Witnesses said 36-year-old Kenyon Brown was speeding westbound on 38th Street around 10:30 Saturday night when he lost control of his SUV near Breen Drive, hit two utility poles and crashed the vehicle into a creek. The accident sheared one utility pole and toppled the other into the brush.

When firefighters arrived, they found the SUV 15 yards off the road in the creek. The front of the vehicle was embedded into the muddy bank which made it difficult for firefighters to stabilize it.

Firefighters had to wade through knee-deep water, around live power lines to get to Brown.

It took Indianapolis Power and Light about 10 minutes to secure the utilities there.  IFD crews were able to free Brown from his SUV in about 15 minutes.

Brown was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in serious condition.

Investigators said Brown had been involved in a domestic disturbance nearby shortly before the accident.
