IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe is taking a break from racing for a temporary new role.

The winner of Sunday's Sao Paulo 300 will serve as honorary director of the Indianapolis Department of Public Safety on Wednesday.

The Indianapolis Star reports Hinchcliffe will meet employees and the public as he tours offices, gets a look at the Indianapolis Fire Department's "Survive Alive Village," attends a rescue demonstration at a fire station and watches Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department training at the police academy.

The driver will also attend strategic planning sessions and other meetings with public officials.

It's part of the department's "Director for a Day Program" that occurs once a month.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opens for Indy 500 practice on Saturday.
