Monroe County - A Bloomington doctor facing federal charges of unlawful drug distribution and health care fraud has agreed to surrender his medical license pending the outcome of his trial.

The Herald-Times reported Wednesday that Dr. Kamal Tiwari's hearing before the state medical licensing board that had been scheduled for this month has been delayed indefinitely.

Federal prosecutors have said the 58-year-old doctor's pain management clinic required patients to receive unneeded injections to get prescription narcotics. His trial is set for Jan. 31.

The Indiana attorney general's office also alleged that his practices had contributed to the deaths of several patients.

Tiwari's attorney, Arend Abel, says his client disputes the state allegations but the voluntary suspension allows his client to focus on the criminal case.
