Digital billboard push ramps up in Indianapolis

Outdoor advertisers want Indianapolis to lift its decade-old ban on digital billboards.

Clear Channel Outdoor hopes to convert up to 30 of its more than 1,200 Marion County billboards to digital formats. The Indianapolis Business Journal reports Clear Channel is lobbying for an ordinance that would require companies to remove an equivalent amount of billboards for each new digital sign.

A 2007 Indiana law allows digital billboards in areas where they aren't banned. The billboards have appeared in other central Indiana counties since then, and Clear Channel has digital billboards at the state-owned Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The city's 2003 ban on digital billboards stems from concerns about safety and digital clutter.

Industry officials say those arguments are outdated.
