A forklift operator was crushed to death at a near east side recycling facility.

The accident happened Monday morning at the Chancellor A. Keesling Recycling Center on Brookside Drive.

Police say 30-year-old James Dozier was operating the forklift when he stood up and became trapped between his machine and another stationary one. He was taken to Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The facility, which mainly recycles electronics, is also transitional employment for inmates released from prison.

"I believe he was one of our transitional employees," said Ryan Puckett with Recycle Force. Puckett said Dozier was working on a temporary basis and had come for job training with the goal of finding full-time work.

An investigation is underway into what led to the accident.
