A northwestern Indiana seventh-grader will represent the state in the National Geographic Bee in Washington next week.

Thirteen-year-old Sean Ives of Trinity Lutheran School in Crown Point will go up against 53 other students in the May 20-22 contest in the nation's capital.

Students in grades 4-8 and ranging in age from 10 to 14 will compete for the bee crown and three college scholarships worth $50,000. The champion wins the top prize of a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

The 54 finalists each have won state-level geographic bees. They represent the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Atlantic Territories, the Pacific Territories and Department of Defense Dependents Schools.
