A serious crash slowed I-69 in Madison County Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around the 217 mile marker in the southbound lanes of the interstate. The crash closed the left southbound lane and traffic was merging slowly into the right lane.

The highway reopened around 6 p.m. and traffic was moving normally through the area.

Police say a vehicle was traveling south on I-69, went off the roadway and struck the cable barriers, but continued south down an embankment into a creek.

Two passing motorists stopped and pulled the driver from the vehicle before emergency crews arrived. The driver was transported to Saxony Hospital.

The northbound lanes also backed up due to drivers slowing down to look at the crash scene.

Police are asking motorists to be safe around the scene and keep traffic moving. Since police are unsure how long the traffic will be delayed, they are asking motorists to avoid the interstate between exits 214-219, if possible.
