Crash closes I-65 NB near Franklin

A crash with serious injuries closed I-65 northbound near Franklin Monday afternoon.

It happened near State Road 44 shortly after 5:30 p.m. State police tell Eyewitness News an SUV was rear-ended by a semi, pushing it into the back of a second semi. The second semi then struck a third semi.

Police say traffic in the area had slowed down due to two crashes on the interstate at the time.

The occupants of the SUV, 18-year-old Kristopher Housley and 50-year-old Bettie Housley, both of Indianapolis, were taken by Lifeline to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Both were reportedly in surgery Monday evening. Kristopher, who was driving, had injuries to his head and upper torso, while his passenger suffered injuries to her lower extremities.

The driver of the third semi, 62-year-old Michael Willems of Buna, Texas, was also taken to Methodist Hospital after suffering a medical condition following the crash.

The conditions of the victims is not known at this time.

The interstate was closed for more than three hours while crews cleared the scene. Traffic was able to move through the area by detouring onto exit ramps near the crash site.
