Indianapolis Metro Police are investigating the scene where a man was shot on the Indianapolis east side late Friday morning. It happened in the 3700 block of Linwood Ave. That's near E. 38th St. and Emerson Ave.

The victim was shot three times. He was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in serious condition.

Neighborhood witnesses say the suspect lured the victim to a vacant house to buy a cell phone and shot the victim before fleeing. IMPD confirmed those reports, adding that it was a pre-arranged meeting from a Craigslist posting.

Once the victim drove up to the house and got out of his SUV, witnesses say it turned into a robbery. Police say the victim was forced back inside his vehicle at gunpoint, and a struggle followed.

"They both fall out the passenger side wrestling. The Mexican guy is yelling, 'He is trying to rob me!' and I heard one shot. They kept wrestling and he broke free and ran up the street," said Derrick, a homeowner in the neighborhood.

Witnesses heard five gunshots, and the victim was shot at least three times.

"I mean, over a cell phone! That's crazy!" Derrick said.

Neighbors also noticed people loitering near the home before the shooting. They described seeing a Dodge Charger or Challenger fleeing the area at a high rate of speed northbound on Linwood.

Witnesses tell WTHR that it's happened before with victims being lured to the same empty house and then being robbed.

"That's a big no-no," Derrick said of going to someone's house for an online transaction.

Police say the suspect may have been injured - and possibly shot - while fighting with the victim.
