Courthouse reopens after suspicious package is cleared
Bartholomew County Courthouse employees are reporting to work after a suspicious package was found outside the courthouse earlier Thursday morning. Police had an x-ray done of the package but were unable to tell what was inside.
They later determined that it was not a threat and reopened the streets around the courthouse.
The package six-inch square package was found near an entrance to the Bartholomew County Courthouse Thursday morning and closed down streets for a couple of hours.
The incident began at around 6:40 am. Bartholomew County Sheriff's officers were conducting a routine exterior security sweep of the Bartholomew County Courthouse when they spotted the package at an entrance to the courthouse.
Deputies immediately secured the scene and restricted access to the Courthouse and immediate area. Bomb Technicians from the Columbus Police Department responded to the scene and deemed the package to be safe.
Additional security sweeps were conducted of the interior and exterior of the building which also determined the area to be safe.
Courthouse employees were allowed to return at approximately 9:40 AM.
Surveillance footage revealed that the package was left at the courthouse around midnight. It was also determined that the package was left for a courthouse employee by a family member.
The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Fire Department and Columbus Regional Hospital EMS.
