A country music star came to Indianapolis Friday to help provide smoke detectors for people in need.

Craig Morgan donated three hundred smoke alarms to the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The "Be a Safety Hero" initiative encourages people to take simple steps to fire safety by having working alarms in their homes.

"Having been a former first responder, I've seen first hand how important it is for a home to have a smoke alarm. You guys here recently experienced that greater than most," he said. "Having lost an entire family. Having not having a smoke alarm in that home. Had they had one probably could have prevented a loss of life."

Morgan was referring to the Olney St. fire in which a family of six died.

Each of the smoke detectors comes with a battery lasting ten years.
