Contamination found at former dry-cleaning site
An initial round of testing around a former dry-cleaning business in Terre Haute has revealed high levels of toxins in the site's soil and groundwater.
Chief City Planner Pat Martin tells the Tribune-Star that full test results expected in two to three weeks will reveal more details about the contaminants and determine which direction they are flowing underground, if they are moving at all.
A few homes and businesses south of the former dry-cleaning business use private wells for water, but he says there are fewer such wells in the area than had initially been thought.
Martin says that even homes not using wells near the site may require future testing because contaminants can cause "vapor intrusion" into basements and crawlspaces of nearby structures.
