Colts fans get "buzzed" to support Colts coach
First it was the team, and now people all over Indianapolis are showing their "shear" determination, to support the CHUCKSTRONG movement.
Colts Coach Chuck Pagano, who was diagnosed with leukemia, is prompting all sorts of sacrifice, including fans lining up to lose their hair.
With each cut, clip and buzz, Colts fans turned CHUCKSTRONG.
"I'm scared, but I'm ready," said Colts fan Ben Caswell. "We're doing it for the coach."
"It's an easy way to show support," added Colts fan Mike Potter. "The way the team's rallied around him is a beacon for the city and I'm hoping for anybody else going through something similar. I mean, it's just hair for me and if it brings someone else hope, why not?"
One by one, fans sat down with Sam, a barber from Red's Barber Shop, at Scotty's Brewhouse downtown. Scotty's had put out the call on social media before the game - "get buzzed for CHUCKSTRONG."
So fans made a visual statement of support for Pagano. The decision to shave their heads wasn't easy, but fans say the coach's strength inspired them, just like it inspired the team to lose their locks for Chuck this week.
"I listened to that motivational speech that he gave last week after the game and it brought tears to my eyes. It was something else. And I know he's going through a lot and we want to be there for him, show him that he's our coach and support him," Caswell said.
Pagano's doctor announced this week that the coach's leukemia is in remission. His blood counts are normal.
"So he's beginning treatment to maintain the remission and cure the disease," Dr. Larry Cripe explained.
It's a disease that's touched more than the coach.
"It happens to a lot of people, honestly. I feel for him because so much has happened to my family, too," said Colts fan Krista Foda.
That's why Krista decided to go CHUCKSTRONG too.
"I'm scared to do it. I'm so scared to lose my hair, but I feel like...it will grow back and it's a one-time thing. It will be good to do," she said.
Krista cut off seven inches of hair for her grandma, for her uncles and for Chuck Pagano. She plans to donate the hair to Locks of Love.
Eventually, it all came off in a buzz cut. She says it shows CHUCKSTRONG is more than a message - it's a mission to support anyone battling cancer.
Krista was one of several women who cut their hair Thursday night. Many also were donating to Locks of Love.
