A new exhibit focusing on the personal hardships Civil War soldiers endured on the battlefield is opening next week at the Indiana State Library.

The exhibit will include letters, photographs and artifacts that shed a personal light on the everyday realities soldiers faced as the war raged between 1861 and 1865.

Called "The Hardship & Hope: The Life of the Hoosier Soldier During the Civil War," it runs May 8-Aug. 29 at the downtown Indianapolis library.

An opening reception on May 8 will include entertainment, notable historians and Civil War re-enactors.

The reception's guests will include members of Indiana's new professional soccer team, the Indy Eleven. The team's nickname pays homage to Indiana's Civil War-era 11th Regiment Indiana Infantry, which initially served under Colonel Lew Wallace.
