Mayor Greg Ballard Sunday announced that City-County Government will operate on a two-hour delay on Monday due to dangerously cold temperatures. Mayor Ballard also encourages local schools, businesses and other organizations to consider at a minimum doing the same.

"Forecasted low temperatures and wind chill factors for the next few days pose a serious risk to public health and safety," said Mayor Ballard. "I encourage anyone leading a local organization to consider the impact on people taking the bus, walking outside, or working in the elements when planning their operations through Wednesday."

Marion County Circuit Court Judge Louis Rosenberg is ordering a two-hour delay for Marion County Superior and Circuit Courts Monday as well.

The Department of Public Safety is working with local organizations to ensure adequate shelter space is available for the city's homeless population and anyone who might need temporary shelter due to loss of power or heat. Persons needing shelter information should contact 2-1-1 or the IMPD non-emergency number at 327-3811. Indy residents are also encouraged to check on their neighbors' welfare, particularly senior citizens and the disabled. Pet owners should also ensure their outdoor animals have adequate shelter and access to non-frozen water during these next few days.

Due to the potential for light snowfall overnight and refreezing of melting snow, Mayor Ballard is raising Marion County's travel status from advisory (yellow) to watch (orange) effective at 10:00 p.m. A watch means motorists should only drive if necessary. The Indy Snow Force will continue to treat area streets overnight and plow accumulating snow as required. Motorists should use extreme caution if driving Monday due to the possibility of slick spots and have an emergency kit in their cars in case they become stranded.

The Department of Public Works has suspended trash pickup Monday through Wednesday this week due to the dangerous cold. Residents with trash pickup those days will be able to place double the amount of trash for collection next week.
