INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Citizens Energy says that you need to avoid the city's waterways because of raw sewage run-off.

In a statement, the company said that with as little as 1/4" of rain, the city's combined storm and sewer system can overflow into in the White River and it's tributaries.

Since Tuesday, Indianapolis has received over three inches of rain, which Citizens says has led to roughly 700 gallons of raw sewage flowing into the White River.

Sewage contains dangerous bacteria, including E. Coli, which can cause serious illness.

Citzens says they are working to complete their DigIndy Project, which will nearly eliminate sewer overflows by the year 2025.
