Chinese cockroach farmers raking it in
Chinese farmers are raising cockroaches to sell to cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies.
China Central TV visited one farmer in eastern China who said he was raking in a fortune on the insects. He said it was a low maintenance job with a high profit margin, and fried cockroaches were also a must-have for his family.
He also said the price for the insects' exoskeletons had gone up ten times since he started his business three years ago. His farms are among the biggest in China, according to CCTV, and are now home to around 20 million cockroaches.
The farmer expects that number to double this winter as the cockroaches breed.
According to CCTV, the insects are mostly used for their protein and cellulose-like substances.
