Two children home alone ran for safety when a fire started in the kitchen of their east Indianapolis apartment.

The fire broke out around 6:30 p.m. in the 7800 block of Brookfield Court near 38th Street and Franklin Road. Firefighters say the blaze started in a third floor unit, where two boys were home alone.

The boys ran outside in only their underwear and told adults at the scene there was a fire in their apartment. Firefighters believe the fire was started by food left unattended on the stove.

A woman who was visiting the complex provided shelter for the boys in her vehicle. The boys' mother, Latrice Polk, was at Walmart across the street, but picked her children up from the woman's car and left the scene. She returned two hours later and spoke with investigators.

The boys were not injured in the fire.

Firefighters say smoke detectors alerted residents in other apartment units. Several people were helped out of the building by firefighters and at least 30 residents were displaced by the fire.

The fire spread quickly to the attic, pushing thick black smoke into the air. Firefighters were able to keep the heaviest damage in the upper apartments and roof areas and spare the lower units from serious damage.
