Child struck, killed while crossing road in Edinburgh

A child has died after being struck by a vehicle in Edinburgh Friday afternoon.

Police received a report of the juvenile pedestrian struck on SR 252 near Lind Drive around 3 p.m. Friday. Officers found a vehicle driven by 81-year-old Ray Chaney of Indianapolis had struck the boy, 10-year-old Ethan Powell, who was reportedly crossing the roadway after checking a mailbox.

Powell was transported by helicopter to Riley Hospital - IU Health in Indianapolis for treatment of his injuries, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Chaney was not injured in the crash.

Police say Powell's father is a firefighter in Franklin.

No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.
