Child dies after being struck by vehicle in southwest Indianapolis

A 10-year-old girl has died after being struck by a car on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

Police say the accident happened around 7:20 p.m. in the 6800 block of West Thompson Road. A passenger car was traveling west on Thompson Road, passing Kollman Road.

The girl was reportedly walking with another child when the accident occurred. The driver of the vehicle noticed the children and swerved, but struck the girl. The other child was not hurt.

Police say neither child was wearing reflective clothing and were walking in the roadway.

Residents in the area say there are no sidewalks along the stretch of road where the crash occurred and the speed limit is 40 mph. The area is also not very well lit.

"It's truly tragic for the parents and the time of season and everything. It's horrible. I mean, I couldn't imagine...I'm just glad I know where my kids are," said neighbor Shannon Spears.

The driver of the car that struck the girl stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation. Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The identities of those involved in the crash have not been released.
