Chase and crash closes Holt Rd. over I-70
Police were chasing a possible stolen car when it crashed on Holt Road over Interstate 70 on the west side early Friday morning. The ramp from westbound I-70 to Holt is closed, as is Holt in both directions at the crash scene.
Two teens in the car were injured and taken to Wishard Hospital, the driver in critical condition and his passenger in serious condition. Wayne Township medics removed both men from the heavily-damaged vehicle.
The chase began at approximately 3:00 a.m. when a Metro officer saw the car fail to yield for a traffic light at Cold Spring and Michigan Rd. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspect vehicle fled south on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
The pursuit lasted several minutes and reached speeds over 100 mph, according to IMPD spokesman Kendale Adams.
After traveling through several downtown streets the driver entered the I-70 ramp at Holt Rd. at approximately 80 mph and struck the retaining wall. No other injuries or collisions were reported as a result of the chase.
"Per IMPD's standard operating procedures involving any police pursuit that results in critical injuries, a joint investigation will be conducted by IMPD's Homicide and Traffic Investigation Units," Adams explained.
Police believe the driver fled because the car may have been stolen, but that has not been confirmed.
Adams added that if the driver survives, he is likely to face a preliminary felony charge of resisting arrest with the possibility of additional charges after an initial investigation is conducted.
