Central Indiana school districts consider one more snow day

With roads still packed with snow, central Indiana school districts are weighing another day of cancellations.

Hundreds of schools were forced to cancel this week after Sunday's snowstorm dumped nearly a foot of snow in some areas. While they won't be required to make up the snow days, parents and teachers alike are itching for kids to get back to class.

Beech Grove, which told Eyewitness News at Noon that it was planning on opening Thursday, made the decision to cancel classes one more day.

The district says it's nearly ready. Parking lots and sidewalks have been cleared, and buildings and buses have been prepared and checked for possible weather-related issues. Administrative staff were all back at work Wednesday getting things ready.

The district serves about 2,500 students at five schools. In fact, some students were at basketball practice Wednesday - probably eager to get out of the house.

The assistant superintendent talked about the factors that go into the decision of whether or not to cancel.

"One of the things that we worry about mostly here in the inner city is the sidewalks - there's a sidewalk underneath there," said Thomas Keeley, pointing to a snow-covered path. "But once you've gone through and you've plowed so much snow, you've got three feet of snow on top of the sidewalk. And you can't expect every single resident to get all that cleaned out. So then you have to think about - can these students comfortably navigate their way to the bus stop? Then when they're standing at the bus stop and the bus comes rolling up, are they gonna be comfortable enough and not fall down when the bus is arriving?"

Keeley said there's a safety concern for students and their parents waiting for the bus in the dark, when conditions are already dangerous.

In the end, Beech Grove did one more pass of sidewalks and roads and decided to cancel for Thursday.

IPS is also closed for Thursday.
