Washington - Muslim Indiana congressman Andre Carson says the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Islamic radicalization risks tearing down the bridges the U.S. has built with Muslims worldwide to fight extremism.

The Indianapolis Democrat is one of two Muslim members of Congress. He says Thursday's televised hearings single out all Muslims for public scorn and suspicion by incorrectly asserting that they're not helping the government fight terrorism.

Carson says peaceful Muslims have been integral to foiling terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks as a result of law enforcement agencies' reaching out to and collaborating with Muslims.

Republican Committee Chairman Peter King of New York says he called the hearing because Muslim community leaders need to speak out more loudly against terrorism and work more closely with law enforcement.
