Building explosion, fire reported in Attica

A building on Perry Street in Attica was destroyed in an explosion and fire Tuesday morning.

The call came in just before 11:00 am. The building, which once housed a Family Center and Daycare but closed in June, is vacant. It happened in the 700 block of Perry Street.

The building was destroyed by fire and by the initial blast, which fire investigators suspect was a gas explosion.

Fire crews were still on the scene several hours later. Attica's police chief tells Eyewitness News a one-block radius around the leak was evacuated. The evacuation affects between 12 and 20 people.
At 9 p.m., the chief estimated it could be two more hours before the leak is capped. Four families remain displaced by the leak and will not return home until at least Wednesday. Crews are also working to displace residual gases from the basement of the building.

Two shelters have been established where evacuees can keep warm and eat: The Methodist Church and the Attica Hotel.

No injuries have been reported.
