Brownsburg man killed in Peru crash

A Brownsburg man died in a four-vehicle crash in Miami County Thursday morning.

State police say 53-year-old Michael Natterstad was driving a semi south on US 31 near SR 218 when he rear-ended a box truck that was slowing for a stop light. Investigators do not know what caused Natterstad to crash into the slowed truck.

The impact caused the driver of the box truck, 44-year-old James Williams of Kokomo, to strike two vehicles which were stopped for the traffic light at SR 218.

Natterstad was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries he suffered in the crash. Ellen Badillo, 38, of Elkhart, who was driving a Jeep struck by the box truck and Caron Boggs, 34, of Peru, a passenger in an SUV struck in the crash, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say all occupants were wearing seat belts, which likely reduced the severity of injuries to the other people involved. Investigators say the impact in Natterstad's truck was too severe for the seat belt to save his life.

The southbound lanes of US 31 were closed for more than four hours while investigators reconstructed the crash and cleaned up debris and spilled fuel.
