Brownsburg man admits poaching 300-pound deer
A central Indiana man has pleaded guilty to charges for poaching a giant deer from a Marion County roadway.
Prosecutors dropped a felony criminal recklessness charge against 47-year-old Donald Ward of Brownsburg in exchange for pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges. The Indianapolis Star reports Ward was placed on probation, ordered to perform community service and stay at least 3 miles from the site near Eagle Creek Park where he shot the buck about 5 a.m. Oct. 2.
Ward told the Star after his arrest he was so enamored by the deer's size he couldn't stop himself from shooting it. Hunters had nicknamed the buck "Nightmare" because of its 10-point rack and weight of nearly 300 pounds.
Ward shot the buck more than a month before Indiana's firearms deer season started.
