Western Indiana police say a fatal car accident in Brazil caused a natural gas leak that forced hundreds of nearby residents from their homes.

The car's 23-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene early Thursday. Police say Robert Neville of Brazil lost control of his car at a high rate of speed and crashed into a natural gas line, a utility pole, several mailboxes and a home.

Clay County Chief Deputy Sheriff Rob Gambill tells the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute that one person was at the home when the crash occurred but that person was not injured.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts told the Tribune-Star that troopers were asked to evacuate residents in a triangular area along U.S. 40.
