Boy who threatened girl to send nude pictures arrested

A Johnson County teenager is accused of threatening several female students and asking them to text explicit pictures of themselves to him. One of the girls did and now that boy faces intimidation and child pornography charges.

An Indian Creek High School student's parent alerted administrators that her daughter had been coaxed into texting a nude picture to a fellow student, a 15-year-old boy. Police say that boy eventually admitted he threatened the girl and received an explicit picture of her.

"Ultimately in the end, you're gonna be caught and it's illegal to do what they're doing," said Trafalgar Police Chief Kurt Heminger.

That boy is now in the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center, facing child pornography and intimidation charges.@School officials are also taking steps to expel him from Indian Creek.

Two weeks ago, a 17-year-old boy allegedly sent a nude photo of himself to a 17-year-old female. That senior also faces expulsion.

"Just constant vigilance, reminding the kids from both a school side and a parent side that they shouldn't do these things," explained Andy Cline of the Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson United School Corporation.

What happened at Indian Creek is not limited to this high school. In fact, it's part of a growing problem nationwide, including in central Indiana, of young students taking explicit pictures and sending them to each other via text message.

Last week, 17 cell phones were confiscated by police from Avon High School students all accused of using a special app to hide nude pictures they had sent to each other. In both cases, teens seemed to be acting with little regard for the long-term impact.

"Most of these kids are doing this without thinking. And they may think it's the norm right now, that it's okay and they won't be caught. But it is not okay and they are obviously being caught," said Heminger.

A crime with real consequences that linger long after any photos are deleted. Police say the 15-year-old suspect sent a letter of apology to four girls he's accused of intimidating, including the one who actually sent him a nude picture.
