A boy was injured in a reported car theft on the east side of Indianapolis Thursday evening.

Police say a woman was getting gas for her car at the Admiral gas station at 9100 E. 21st Street, near Post Road, around 7:30 p.m. The woman told police a man jumped in her car and drove off with her 13-year-old son inside.

The teen was found near the Waffle House restaurant at 21st and Post moments later. The boy suffered minor scrapes and is reported to be "fine," but was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health as a precaution.

Police are not sure how the boy was able to escape the vehicle.

Minutes later, the car was involved in a crash on the ramp from I-70 eastbound to Mt. Comfort Road in Hancock County. The car rolled over and caught fire, seriously injuring the driver, who was taken to Eskenazi Health.

Police say the suspect was driving at nearly 100 mph on I-70 before the crash.

The suspect could face preliminary charges including auto theft and criminal confinement.
