A four-year-old is being treated at Riley Hospital for Children after shooting himself in the hand.

It happened on the Indianapolis north side in the 1700 block of Randall Road.

A visibly shaken Clara Rogers says she was watching her four-year-old great grandson Nicolas while his babysitter was at a doctor's appointment when he got ahold of a handgun from a lock box.

Rogers says she didn't know he had gotten ahold of the weapon and stepped out to her backyard. That's when she heard him yell to her, "I shot...I shot!"

The elderly woman says she was very afraid. She says her grandson called her from Riley Hospital for Children to update her on Nicolas' condition.  She said he was shot in his left hand.

Several people were at the residence on 75th and Randall near Ravenswood, including the boy's father.

Rogers says her grandson and Nicolas moved in with her several months ago.

When asked if she thought Nicolas was going to be okay, she said with her hands trembling in the air, "Yes, thank God!"

The shooting remains under investigation.
