Authorities say a 12-year-old southern Indiana boy has died after being shot in the head when his older brother mishandled a rifle.

Jennings County Sheriff's Sgt. James Blevins said Thursday that Seth Box died at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Emergency workers found Seth unresponsive after he was shot by his 16-year-old brother late Monday at the family's rural home several miles north of North Vernon.

Jennings County deputies were called to a home in Sand Creek Township near CR 1000 North on CR275 West at 11:37 pm Monday night.

Deputies learned that the 12-year-old had been shot in the head and was not responsive.

Sgt. Blevins reported that the family had been shooting firearms earlier in the day. The 16-year-old was handling the weapon in the home when a .22 caliber rifle discharged, striking the 12-year-old in the head.

Other family members were asleep in the home at the time of the shooting.
