Body camera captures suspect dragging officer
ORLANDO (WESH) - A traffic stop became a life-threatening situation for a South Daytona police officer.
Police said Frank Wetzel, 61, was pulled over after blowing through a stop sign. Police said he started fidgeting with something next to him, making the officer suspicious.
The officer was running the accused violator's license when he noticed him ruffling his hands near the console of his yellow Jeep, police said. The officer identified Wetzel as a previously convicted felon.
Investigators said the officer asked the suspect if he was hiding anything in the Jeep.
"Frank, there's nothing illegal in the car or anything?" the officer asks in the footage.
Police said the officer found a large machete and a stolen handgun in the Jeep, but not before Wetzel allegedly refused commands to get out of the vehicle.
Officials said the officer reached in to get the suspect out, and that Wetzel started the vehicle and pulled out with the officer still hanging on.
Wetzel was pulled out of his vehicle at gunpoint and placed in the back of a patrol car, where he then asked the officer if he was being arrested, police said.
"Yes, for one, you just ran over me," replied the officer.
Police said Wetzel later told officers he tried to run because he knew the weapons would put him back behind bars.
