Indianapolis - Channel 13 is again launching one of its longest running community campaigns, and it won't be a success without you. It's time for the 21st annual Bob Gregory Coats for Kids campaign.

Sometimes it takes just a little to bring a child lots of joy. It's as simple as the gift of a coat.

Retired Channel 13 Weatherman Bob Gregory is back, leading a campaign that has helped keep our kids warm now for 21 years.

What makes "Coats for Kids" so popular year after year?

"It's something that everybody can identify with, everybody can participate in, and it doesn't take an awful lot of effort on their part to do so, so they all share in this common experience," said Gregory.

All that you have to do is drop off a new or gently-used heavy winter coat at any area Tuchman Cleaners location. Or drop off a coat at the Indianapolis Colts home game on Sunday, October 7th just outside the RCA Dome.

And Channel 13 personalities will help kids select your generous donations on Distribution Day at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

"If you need a coat. We take your word. You come in with your child and we'll send you in the right direction to get a coat, free coat, no questions asked about whether you're working, not working, economic situation or anything," said Gregory.

The Salvation Army helps set up the thousands of coats for this special coat give-away.

"For the Salvation Army and Channel 13 and Tuchman's it's just been a great marriage that we hope will continue as long as the need is still out there."

And the need is great. Last year, thousands of families waited in long lines for coats, some wrapped in nothing but blankets.

"What better thing can you do than provide some warmth to a kid," said Gregory.

And Bob says donate today, because winter is just around the corner.

"As hot as it's been lately, obviously you're not thinking coats, but we know this isn't gonna last. The weather's gonna change."

But the excitement for your gift of a coat stays the same.

And the most poignant reason of all - because it'll be better to be warmer than cold.

Here's an overview of Bob Gregory's Coats for Kids campaign:

  • Drop off new or gently used heavy winter coats at any Tuchman Cleaners location through Monday, October 8th.
  • The Colts Coat collection is on Sunday, October 7th. Drop off a coat as you head into the game to watch the Colts take on Tampa Bay.
  • And we'll distribute the coats on Saturday, October 13th, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Parents must bring their children to get fitted for the coats.
