A global nonprofit organization that works to create friendships, jobs and opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities drew about 1,700 volunteers from 18 countries to Bloomington over the weekend.

Best Buddies International held a leadership conference on Indiana University's main campus.

Anthony Kennedy Shriver founded the organization in 1989. He's the son of late Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver and late diplomat R. Sargent Shriver.

He was in Bloomington over the weekend, as were Madeline Fletchall and Zach Curtis of Fishers, a Best Buddies pair for nearly five years.

Fletchall tells The Herald-Times the organization has given her a best friend she might not have had otherwise.
