Avon bank robbery suspects in custody

Avon  - Two men are in custody following a bank robbery and chase during which a shot was fired at a police officer.

The bank robbery took place at the PNC branch in Avon at 10966 US 36.

Police arrested Levi Vollrath and Jerry Hefley, both 21.

According to police, one of the men handed a note to the teller demanding cash. The other man acted as the getaway driver.

The men fled the scene and police initiated a brief chase. The suspects hit a few cars during the chase, but no injuries were reported.

Vollrath was taken into custody quickly. Police say Hefley pulled a gun at one point. The officer shot twice, missing Hefley.

Hefley was taken into custody without any injuries. Bullet holes were found in a nearby home.

During the manhunt, police set up a perimeter in the area of 30th (300 North) and Raceway in Clermont. Robey Elementary School was on lockdown and students were held about half an hour past their usual dismissal time.

Note: The original version of this story indicated that Hefley fired a shot. Eyewitness News has since learned that Helsey did not fire, but that the officer fired twice.
