More than 30,000 children have landed in the emergency room after a baby gate-related injury.

A study by Nationwide Children's Hospital found that between 1990 and 2010, the number of such injuries nearly quadrupled to an average of 1,800 each year. Experts say, though, most of those cases could be prevented.

Researchers say putting the right gate in the right place is key. For example, there are specific baby gates made for blocking the top of stairs. It's also important to read and follow the installation instructions.

Gates should be used in homes with children ages 6 months - 2 years.
