Arc of Northwest Indiana closing 22 group homes
An advocacy group for people with developmental disabilities is closing its 22 group homes in northwestern Indiana and moving their 90 residents to other group homes as far away as Indianapolis.
The Arc of Northwest Indiana spokeswoman Sue Crissman tells the Post-Tribune the closings will result in the layoffs of 120 employees.
She says problems providing adequate nursing services at the group homes were a key factor in the decision to close them.
Arc of Indiana Executive Director John Dickerson says the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration had grown increasingly concerned "about the overall health and safety" of the homes' residents.
He says the transfers to other group homes are intended to be temporary but could become permanent depending on how the residents' families feel.
