Fire crews are working at an apartment building just northeast of the intersection of 86th and Ditch Road on the north side.

Heavy smoke was coming from the roof of one of the buildings at the Barrington Apartments when firefighters arrived around 3:30 a.m. Friday.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.  At least two residents had to escape from their outdoor balcony.  One man was able to jump safely, and a woman jumped into the arms of firefighters, according to IFD spokesman Brian Morris.

James Robinson said he saw flames outside the front door of his apartment, "And I just ran around to the balcony and jumped off there."

Several units are damaged, although inspectors have not completed their estimate on level of damage.

The fire appeared to start in an interior hallway, but the source has not been confirmed.
