Alert neighbor discovers west side apartment fire
His neighbors are calling George Durham a hero this morning after he suspected his apartment building was on fire and called 911.
Durham said he was watching television in his apartment in the 6500 block of Spring Hill Way, near 46th Street and I-465, and began smelling smoke. He couldn't find the source, but he decided to call 911 before knocking on his neighbors doors to alert them.
IFD crews arrived just before 1:00 a.m. to find heavy smoke in a nearby apartment and opened up the walls to find the actual fire.
IFD investigators determined that a heater motor in the laundry room connected to the building started the fire.
Five people displaced by the fire are spending the night with relatives. Nobody was hurt. Damage is estimated at $150,000, according to IFD investigators.
