Adjusting to traffic changes in Hamilton County

Expect to see more changes on the road if you drive through the Carmel area, especially around I-465 and U.S. 31.  Starting Monday night, the westbound exit ramp from I-465 to Meridian Street will go from two lanes to one.

This area has already undergone a lot of changes since the major closure on Meridian/U.S. 31 between 136th Street and Old Meridian Street back in early April. Now, INDOT is reconfiguring the westbound exit ramp off I-465 to allow crews to continue their work.

Speaking of that work, despite the barrels, signs, closures, detours and restrictions, traffic has adjusted to all of the changes. While travel times are slower especially during rush hour, there haven't been any major problems to report.

Drivers will notice lots of changes already in the two and a half months since the project started with pylons rising out of the ground, piers going up and lots of ground being moved to form the new walls for the new road. The reconfiguration of the westbound exit ramp at I-465 is a minor one and INDOT encourages drivers to continue to plan ahead to avoid traffic tie-ups.

INDOT spokesman Nathan Riggs says, "Where traffic could normally have two lanes with there only be one-for people waiting until the last minute to get in that right lane to exit, that could create conditions for bottlenecking and congestion. So, we do have messages running now on overhead dynamic message signs that beginning Monday night there will only be one lane."

The I-465 exit reconfiguration goes into effect Monday night at 9:00 p.m.and will last through the end of the year. The full project surrounding the closure here in Carmel is still set to be complete by Thanksgiving.
