Accident sends two to hospital; Firefighter also injured

Witnesses told firefighters that a frustrated driver caused an accident that sent two men to the hospital, damaged 2 cars, a stop sign, and a fire hydrant Saturday evening.

It happened about 6:21 p.m. at Shelby Street and Edwards Avenue.

Traffic on Shelby was stopped due to a passing train.   Witnesses say the driver of the van, Steven Freeman, 34, was unable to enter into the stopped traffic from his position on Edwards and cut across all 4 lanes of stopped traffic on Shelby. When he did, he struck the southbound truck driven by John Berkhulz, 67.  The vehicles skidded into a hydrant and stop sign.

Both victims required extrication and were removed in about 15 minutes by IFD Tactical crews.  They were transported to local hospitals.  Freeman was in serious condition and Berkhulz was in good condition when they were transported.

One firefighter was also taken to the hospital with a slight injury.
