A fuel leak that spilled more than 19,000 gallons of diesel fuel in Indianapolis has been traced to a damaged pipeline owned by Marathon Petroleum Corp.
Crews worked overnight into Saturday to cut and remove a section of the 8-inch diameter pipeline and continue cleaning up the spill site that includes businesses, a golf course and homes.
Marathon spokeswoman Sid Barth tells The Indianapolis Star that more than 19,000 gallons of diesel fuel had been recovered at the site.
Barth says the leak is suspected to be a "slow failure" that was so small and so slow it wasn't detected by sensors.
Crews hope to complete the repair work in time to allow an adjacent road that was closed Thursday to reopen by Monday morning's rush-hour traffic.
